WINCHESTER 255 LIGHT STRIKES

Question

I have a Win 255 in for repair for light strikes. It is intermittent when it will fire. The firing pin positive protrusion is good at about .030-.035 when the pin is pushed flush at the rear as if the hammer was striking it. I checked the leading edge of the left hand extractor portion of the firing pin and it is not limiting it from moving forward. The bolt does fit tight for an old rifle with little movement when placed in the locked position when disassembled from the lever. The bolt does move slightly when the hammer falls when the rifle is together though. Besides a new bolt or barrel what else can be done to fix this issue. JD

Answer

Have you checked head space yet?

I would also look at the chamber to see if some ammo is seating deeper in the chamber. Any drag on the hammer that causes it to loose inertia? Any damage to chamber? Erick

Answer

Yep, check headspace. Now .030-.035 is quite a difference especially if the gun has a bit of headspace. Does the firing pin hit the case rim in the correct place? Ken

Answer

Was the chamber mouth dented from dry firing? The cartridge’s rim needs to be supported when the firing pin strikes. -TL
