10-22 EXTRACTOR

Question

I work on a lot of Ruger 10-22s. One of the first things I do is check the fit of the extractor to the bolt.

I recently picked up the AGI video Armorer’s Course Ruger 10-22 Rifles. Bob states that the extractor should cam out as much as 0.025″ when a round is slipped under the extractor.

If I use 0.025″ I have issues with the extractor pushing the bolt back enough to cause the headspace open enough that the rifle won’t fire.

So how does Bob get away with 0.025″ and I have issues with that much cam out? DC

Answer

Keep in mind that Bob says “as much as” and not “at least” .025. I’m not sure any of the 10/22’s I’ve worked on have cammed out that much and, in my experience, they have to cam out to allow the round to slip under and still be held securely, but the actual distance is something I’ve never particularly worried about. Answer

I believe Bob states .015 to .025. So if .025 gives you a problem reduce the spring out till the problem goes away. Bryan

Answer

You can also adjust the extractor slot in the barrel so it doesn’t push the extractor out as far. Ken

Answer

You can also polish and Dykem/magic marker the nose of the extractor hook and file/belt sand its contact point with the extractor slot so it doesn’t hold the bolt open. Jack
