1902 Colt Revolver

Question

I have a Colt 1878 DA 45LC (1902 Philippine Constabulary) in my shop. I have never seen one before. There is no cylinder latch on these. Is there any logical way to repair a loose cylinder?

Answer

You can still get some parts, be glad because you’ll need them. There is no realistic way to work on these and come out ahead. It’s an incredibly fragile design, with nothing but age to recommend it. I will not work on them, and if there were some way to convince me that this would be a good idea, I would not offer any sort of guarantee on the repairs – period. Tell your customer they own an interesting wall hanger, nothing more, that isn’t worth fixing. DC

Answer

These are much easier to work on than the “Lightning” DA revolvers or the New Army revolvers. First what do you mean by loose cylinder? Side to side or up and down or back and forth? Ken

Answer

I worked on a Colt New Army in .41 LC. It wasn’t too bad if you don’t need to make a profit (in my case), or the owner doesn’t mind paying excessive amount. Parts were nowhere to be found. I had to do a lot of metal stretching to get it back to shooting status.

Anyway, the 1902 revolver doesn’t have a cylinder latch because the cylinder doesn’t swing out. There is a loading gate on the right hand side. –TL
