Colt 44 Broken Top Strap

Question

I advised the customer not to shoot this revolver. There is a noticeable crack on the bottom of the top strap at the rear. The top has been brazed. Can the top strap be TIG welded? I will certainly appreciate your assessment.

Answer

Welding, brazing, high-temperature soldering on recoil shock bearing structure is not kosher. The revolver is a goner. -TL

Answer

It is DONE , hi dollar wall hanger now, too hot a load was fired in it ,

RED tag her. I would advise the owner to pull the FP out.

Answer

Hi dollar scrap metal, now.

Answer

If you can/could grind out and remove the braze then fill the crack with weld…..WITHOUT GETTING THE HEAT WHERE THE PRESSURE IS AROUND THE BREECH FACE/FIRING PIN BUSHING, then you could weld her up, but you would still want to reheat treat the receiver and that would be expensive. Doing as you mention and making it a wall hanger, not a bad idea. Ken
