Head Pulled Off 22 Mag Brass

Question

This is a strange one. Customer brought in a Marlin Mod. 883 in 22 Mag. with a case stuck in the chamber. The head is pulled off more or less flush with the end of the chamber. I tried the new brush method and Kroil to see if the brass would push out. No Luck. There is not enough brass left on the end to grip with needle nose pliers. I called Brownells and they do not carry a broken brass extractor that will fit the WMR or 22LR case. Larry Potterfield said to pour Cerrosafe in the chamber and tap the plug and brass out. I have my doubts in this case.

If anyone has an idea, please share. Thanks in advance. Phil

Answer

Cerrosafe should work. A properly sized screw tap is another idea. Freezing the broken brass with freezing spray, followed by reverse, is another idea. -TL

Answer

Could you use a chamber reamer to recut and remove softer brass? BN

Answer

I had a similar experience and used a lead fishing sinker from WalMart. Tapped down the barrel with a hardwood dowel, it caught the brass and pushed it out just fine. I did soak the chamber down with Kroil overnight, not sure if that helped at all. Cerrosafe will work fine as well, I’m just a cheapskate and didn’t have Cerrosafe at the time. 🙂 Jeff

Answer

I try to find a tap that will cut into the brass but not cut through it and into the chamber. Then turn it in by hand and tap it out. All the other ideas mentioned should work as well. Ken
