I’ve got a JC Higgins Model 28 (aka Sears & Roebuck 583.71) that the customer complains doesn’t eject well and often jams.
I’ve pulled the extractor and it has neutral/slightly positive rake and according to the dimensions in LeeRoy Weisner’s Handbook, the dimensions of the extractor are spot on.
Funny thing is there seems to be about .020 or so gap from the tip of the extractor to the rim of a .22 case when seated on the breach face (not sure if I’m describing this clearly). The extractor spring and plunger are good and it moves freely so not stuck.
Is this typical for the hook of the extractor to have this much of a gap to the rim of a case? JC
The gap is NOT unusual but it is incorrect. If you pull the case away from the bolt face as it will be pulled when fired, the extractor will stop its forward movement. The ejector will have nothing to push the case against and will simply push the shell off of the breech and you will get jams. Make the extractor hold the case up on the breech face when the case is pulled away from the chamber until the ejector kicks it out. Ken
