MAUSER 1934 32 CAL. HEAVY PITTING

Question

This gun was given to me. It was found in an old barn that was going to be torn down. This gun was all rusted and had heavy pitting on the outside of the gun. The inside of the gun and magazine was caked in with dried cosmoline. I clean out the grease and rust. Inside of the gun is in perfect condition including the firing pin, spring and barrel. I sand blast the outside of the gun. I shot the gun and it shot well. It is now a tin can shooter. It is fun to shoot. My question is to anyone out there? Is there any way to cover the heavy pitting on the outside of the gun. Some of the pitting is as deep as .007″. No I do not want to use bond-dough! Any help!

Answer

Although I have not used it DuraCoat has a product called DuraFil, which you use an airbrush to build up the pits, sand down and then you can give it a coat of DuraCoat. I like and use DuraCoat, just have not used their DuraFil product. Below is their web site.

Pitting is hard to fill, but you can help some by bringing the remaining surface closer to the bottoms of the pits. Draw filing can do a lot, as can just sanding. As long as you keep it smooth and you’re not in any ultra-thin area where .007 will degrade the integrity (which the pitting would already have done), you can get a nearly smooth surface. Glass beading and then DuraCoat (not Cerakote, it’s too thin) will hide a lot. Jeff

Answer

Just be careful you don’t fill or sand out the serial number. LE and ATF will have little appreciation in the aesthetic improvement if you do. Jack

I have a Mauser 1910 in .25acp. It is an interesting pistol with the proper amount of German quirkiness. Guns of this age (close to, if not more than, 100 years old) all have stories to tell. The pitting just says it to whoever catches sight of the gun “Let me tell you somethin’, sonny…” If I were you, I would keep it the way it is. -TL

Thank you guys. I’ll probably keep it that way.

Answer

.007 is nothing, file/sand out the pits and reblue it. Ken
