Ruger New Model Blackhawk Trigger Creep

Question

A regular customer just brought in a limited edition Ruger new model black hawk in 44 special. It has a LOT of trigger creep. He wants the creep taken out. My question is, can it be done the same way the Colt SAA is done. The trigger job course doesn’t have the Ruger in it. Jerry Kuhnhausen’s book says it is easier to put a new power custom hammer and trigger in it and I don’t see where he covers a trigger job because of it. Being a limited edition, the customer wants it left stock. I believe the hammer full cock notch shelf has to remain at least .030 of engagement. Any advice on doing a trigger job on this one? I think they may have an issue with a thin case hardening but I don’t know why that would matter as I wouldn’t be taking metal off of engagement surfaces. Randy

Answer

This is not an uncommon complaint on many Ruger single action revolvers and gunsmiths do trigger jobs on these all the time. It’s the same basics as any SA revolver. Lots of people like the Power Custom kits for this, they usually have trigger, hammer and springs that smooth the trigger and bring the pull weight down. Pretty simple solution, costs more in parts, less in time. The Power Custom Series 1 and Series 2 fixtures are probably a better investment if you will be doing multiple jobs of this nature, and they aren’t gun specific. Wolff spring packs for the gun will help a lot as well.

By the way, the “Limited Edition” doesn’t really add any collector value anymore, these are distributor exclusives more than any true collector piece. The drop in Power Custom kit is reversible, if needed.

Good luck, Jeff

Watch GunTech #70 for standard sear in hammer notch trigger job. They are all done the same. This one also dramatically limits “screw up potential.” Jack

Answer

Yes the trigger job is the same as a Colt SAA. Like Nike says…..”Just Do It”. Ken
