SAVAGE 24B-DL HEADSPACE

Question

This one is .22LR over a 20Ga. No loose breach, everything is tight. The 20Ga has about .023 to maybe .025 headspace. The firing pin is at .005 short of max protrusion and barely touches the primer. The customer wants an inexpensive fix. Would this one work with Bob’s CS method of some TIG in the rim cut of the extractor or behind it so it won’t go so far in? The extractor is not as wide as most of the cheap single barrel type.

The .22 has some extraction issues but I think if I clean up the firing pin ding and rim cut on the extractor and polish the chamber it should work better. The extractor is a little loose, but I don’t think replacing the extractor will help much. Any advice? Randy

Answer

Sounds like the chamber on the shotgun was reamed deeper than needed…….ie headspace and the .22 barrel is correct. Do like you mention to the .22 barrel that will probably cure its issues. The CS method of fitting the extractor to remove headspace is the way I would fix the bottom 20ga barrel. Ken
