SAVAGE 24V 30-30 UNLOCKS WHEN FIRED

Question

Have a customer’s Savage 24V B in 30-30 win and 20 ga. It unlocks when you fire the 30-30 but not the 20 ga. My first thought was that he was somehow moving the lever when he shot it. When test fired it did unlock and break about 1/4 in. Putting Dykem on the locking block and lug it showed it was not locking up fully. When I rapped the top of the butt stock on the bench it would unlock.
I smoothed the face of the locking block, cleaned and oiled all the moving parts. This allowed it to lock up farther. Repeating the bench test it did not unlock. When test fired however it broke open even farther.
Has anyone had this problem? I have seen on some forums that the models in .223 have the same trouble.
I think the cure is to change the angle of the barrel lug and make a new locking block. The near 45 degree angle of the lockup is too easy to push the locking block back.

Answer

You shouldn’t have to make a new locking block but you do want to increase the locking block engagement on the barrel and change the angle to less negative. Ken
