SAVAGE 93R17 REMOVING THE BARREL

Question

Has anyone successfully been able to remove the barrel on a Savage 93R17? It looks to be pinned on but I removed the pin and the barrel will rotate some but will not come out of the receiver.

Answer

I haven’t had to take the barrel off of a 93R17…..other Savages yes but not that one. I don’t know if they are screwed in or pinned. Many Savages are pressed in and not threaded. You may want to make a long punch that fits inside the receiver that will push the barrel out. Ken

OK, got the barrel off. On the 93r17 the barrel is pinned on but also the front stud (right in front of the pin) has to also be taken out as it locks onto a flat on the barrel shank. Mine was so tight I had to cut it off and drill it out. Once the pin and stud are removed I had to take a brass rod and drive the barrel out of the receiver as it was really pressed in tight. This will mess up the entrance to the chamber so you will have to clean that out. No problem in my case as I had a bad headspace problem and have to set the barrel back and recut the chamber anyway.
