Customer brings in a lever action that he was going to mount a scope on. He buggered up one of the plugs and it will have to be drilled and re-tapped. The hole was a 6-48. My question, what size drill and tap should I use to re-tap the receiver
The next standard screw thread listed in the Machinery’s Handbook is 8-36, assuming you want to use the fine thread. The drill size for tapping is #29. You’ll also need to expand the through holes in the mount, which requires a #18 drill to pass a #8 screw.
Answer
I assume the hole was plugged. He tried to remove the plug to install the base. He stripped the plug when he was doing so.
The hole is still good. It is just being plugged by a stripped plug. It is possible to drill through the plug with #31 drill bit and re-chase the thread with a 6-48 tap. -TL
Answer
Brownells also sells some slightly over sized 6×48 screws and taps for that type of repair. Ken

Update:
After getting the plug removed, I didn’t have to drill the receiver. Did have to re-tap the hole and used a 8-40 tap. Job completed all is well. Just wanted to say thanks to all who responded.
