SKB/ITHACA FOREARM LUG

Question

I have an SKB/Ithaca S/S shotgun that has a problem. The lug that holds the forearm in place has come out of the barrels. It is not broken, just came out. I am just getting started in gunsmithing and am not sure I want to try this one. If any of you guys have experience silver soldering or have any advice just let me know.

Answer

Well, we would turn that job down. To get the lug to stay attached under the stress of shooting it would have to be silver soldered in place and not soft soldered. That means the barrels must be heated red hot for the solder to take. So the ribs would want to come apart, the heat-treat in the barrel would be altered and you would end up with hard and soft spots in the barrels, so that is a no-no.
