WINCHESTER SUPER SX3 SHOTGUN

Question

Have one of these in and the link and link and link pin is broken. Got a new link but I am having a problem getting a new link pin. I got the link from Winchesters service center in Arnold, Missouri and the link pin has been back ordered since March 7th. I called today and they now say September. They keep extending the date of availability. Anyone know where I can get one? Thanks, Frank

Answer

Seems like a simple enough part, maybe you can make one or have one made by a machine shop.

Question Follow Up

I also checked Gun Parts Corp and found out they were sold out. These pins are hardened and tapered. Be difficult to make with ordinary lathes. Too small. Frank

Answer

I’d suggest Midwest Gun Works and Jack First, but you probably already checked them. I’m not sure why this would be hard to make on a standard lathe, it’s not that big and hardening it isn’t hard to do either. If you start with hardened steel, there shouldn’t be anything that changes the hardness involved in turning it.

The other option is to tell the customer the part is backordered and you’ll get it as soon as you can, but can’t promise them anything for 3-6 months or so. Jeff

Question Follow Up

The pin is around .680 long and .155 in diameter and it is tapered. I would like to see that made on a 14 x 40 lathe. How would you hold it and how would you keep it from flexing and would you cut a taper that short manually? Thanks, Frank

Answer

How about chucking a 1-2 inch section of rod in a drill press and use diamond files to get the taper, then cut to length?? Rick

Answer

You can buy tapered pins used on machinery. They make many different sizes and one may work.I would fit it and then case harden it as they are low carbon steel. They make reamers for them also so you could make the hole fit the new pin. Jack R

Well folks everything you say may work but then the time evolved, expense and the chances of a good outcome are slim. Seems to me to be a bad investment. My experience tells me to use the right parts for the job. I think I will wait for the part to arrive. Thanks, Frank

Answer

I would chuck up some steel in the lathe turn it to the largest dia then file the taper and polish as need until it fit correctly. Then harden and temper. Just like making a firing pin or screw etc. Ken
